Velma Bean, 89, passed away Monday, December 30th, 2019 with her loving daughter by her side. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, January 4th, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Marshall Memorial Funeral Home.
Velma was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 60 years Coy Bean; parents Elmer and Eula Gunter; brothers Burl Gunter and Harold Gunter; and sisters Eleanor Gunter and Corrine Gunter Terrel.
Mrs. Bean was a life-long Marshall County resident and graduated Douglas High School in the 1950s. In 1958, she married her sweetheart of only 6 months Coy Bean. They enjoyed a wonderful year of marriage, before they welcomed their daughter Sylvia.
While Sylvia was little, Velma enjoyed being a homemaker for her husband and child. Later, Mrs. Bean enjoyed substitute teaching and staying active in her daughter’s life.
Velma was one of the best seamstresses in the Marshall County area. She was constantly working on crocheting or embroidering family heirlooms and she was always showing Sylvia how to make treasures. She even tried to teach Sylvia how to quilt on the quilting rack.
In her later years, Coy and Sylvia went to the beach with their loving granddaughter Courtney, where they finally got to see the ocean. Courtney remembers the two of them laughing like teenagers, rolling their pants legs up and getting into the ocean.
Velma is survived by her daughter Sylvia Lay and her husband Timothy; and her granddaughter Courtney Lay.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 4th, 2020 from 1:00 pm until the start of the service at Marshall Memorial Funeral Home.
