John F Davis

January 19, 1944 — October 5, 2018

John Franklin Davis, 74, passed away Friday October 5th, 2018 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center with his two daughters by his side.  Funeral Services were held Monday October 9th, 2018 at 1:00 pm in Piedmont, AL.  Brother Rodney Ragsdale officiated.  Burial was immediately afterwards at Goshen Cemetery, with Mr. Davis receiving military honors.

John was preceded in death by his parents H.O. and Sara Stewart Davis; and his sister Jean Davis Studdard.

Mr. Davis was a graduate of Spring Garden High School in Spring Garden Alabama.  He later attended Jacksonville State University where he graduated with a BS in Accounting.

John volunteered for the US Army where he served his country, earning the National Defense Service Medal, before he was honorably discharged.  He was very proud of the time that he spent serving his country, often remarking that it was his duty.  His daughters just remember the old green Army jacket that he wore around the house.

After serving his country, he started his civilian life as an accountant where he worked in the private sector for several years, before starting work with the Alabama Internal Revenue Service as a Revenue Examiner.  After Mr. Davis retired from the IRS, he worked as a local accountant and tax man until his death.

In his spare time, he collected fishing lures and proudly displayed them for anyone to view.  Any trip to his house, included talking fishing lures, or showing you the new lures that he had just found.

He also loved spending time on the “farm”, where he lived his entire life.  In 1994, his family home was destroyed by the Palm Sunday tornado, so he rebuilt his house where the old homestead was located.

John was an animal lover and always had dogs and cats following him around.  Animals trusted him and he could often coax a wounded animal to come to him for help.

He was also known for his storytelling ability.  His attention to detail and his memory were incredible and he could make you feel like you were part of the story at any time.

John is survived by his two loving daughters; LeAnne Dickeson and her friend Matthew Creel, and Michelle Byers; his two grandchildren Trent Dickeson and Hali Dickeson; brother-in-law and friend Hugh Studdard; nephew Byron Studdard; and niece Angela Studdard Deaver.
