Janet Ranelle Gillispie Browning of Boaz, Alabama, was born on February 17, 1951, alongside her twin sister and lifelong best friend, Janice Gillispie Gunshefski. The two were born in Altus, Oklahoma, to Doretha (Wallace) Gillispie and Monroe Gillispie. On February 26, 2025, Janet peacefully passed away, joining her Heavenly Father, surrounded by family. Proceeding in death her sister, Janice, and both parents.
At the age of 19, Janet met the love of her life, James “Jim” Orson Browning, through her mother’s introduction, and they married in 1971. A few years later, they were blessed with a son, James “Jay” Robert Browning (Trena). Janet spent the next 54 years as Mrs. Browning, creating a beautiful family. She is survived by six grandchildren; Hunter Browning (Stephanie), Kimberly Collins (Zach), Stetson Grimes (Hannah), Jayden Browning, Wyatt Browning, Rylan Browning and six great-grandchildren; Conway, Kynzley, Addison, Cash, Laikyn and Edie. She treasured spending time with her family, especially playing games and visiting. Her love for the little ones was evident in everything she did.
A gifted cook, Janet shared her recipes with family and friends, many of which will continue to be passed down through the generations. She had a special knack for adding her own unique touch, such as never forgetting to top her potato soup with "lots of cheese."
Her talent in the kitchen was a natural extension of her career as the cafeteria manager for the Gwinnett County School System, where she retired after many years of dedicated service.
In her golden years, Janet traveled across the country with Jim and their beloved Yorkie, Nikki, in their RV. A woman of many qualities, Janet’s style and elegance were evident in every aspect of her life. She was always impeccably dressed, with a passion for fashion and jewelry (and had a secret tip for keeping her diamonds sparkling bright—Windex). Janet was also a proud and active member of the LDS Church, where her unwavering faith and kindness touched countless lives.
Janet will forever be remembered as an irreplaceable matriarch, whose laughter, love, and advice left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Her impact on those lucky enough to know her will never be forgotten. Services will be held Monday, March 3rd at Marshall Memorial Gardens. Family viewing begins at 11 o’clock followed by friends visitation at 12 o’clock, and lastly the funeral begins at 2 o’clock.
