James Herbert Houston Cookston, age 72, passed away at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, Alabama, surrounded by his family Wednesday evening, July 8, 2020. Houston was born April 28, 1948, to Herbert and Gertrude Cookston. He was the first born of five children. Houston is survived by his wife and best friend of 53 years, Carolyn Ruth; children, Thresa (and Winston), Lorine (and Dewayne), Franklin (and Denise), Chris (and Tina), Brandon (and Brendia); eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Houston and Carolyn also had a daughter that passed after only a few hours of life. Today, Lorie Ann has a beautiful smile while being held in Daddy’s arms.
Whether working as a machine operator, butcher, or flooring installer, Houston always worked hard to provide a great life for his family. His first job was washing cars for a local car lot—for the salary of $17 per week. As a young man, Houston’s work ethic and integrity quickly translated into his true calling. In 1969, he was ordained as a Bishop for The Church of God of the Union Assembly. For over a half century, Houston preached the message of hope to generations spanning from Alabama to Arizona. Regardless of his role, whether assistant or senior pastor, his desire was to share with everyone the love and peace that he had found in Christ. Houston was more than successful; to those who knew him, he was a giant. The love and peace he exuded lives on in his family. While the earth we know will never be the same, Heaven has become even more the desired end.
The family will be receiving friends on Saturday, July 11, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Marshall Memorial Funeral Home. The funeral service will be immediately following at 2:00 PM.
